Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016 in Kolkata
Alexander McQueen “I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it.” The fashion scene in India is changing. We can take credit for some of the most notable names in the fashion industry today. Their works have been rocking the runway, for years now! There are ground-breaking experiments with ethnic, western and fusion patterns, designs and cuts, and Indian designers are behind these. The people are growing, too; gone are the days when fashion week was an alien term to us. Today, India has its own big fashion events, showcasing the incredible works of our fashion gurus. And, one of the biggest among them is just in its 12th edition. I’m talking about the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016!

Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016
This year, the journey began on the 26th of November, 2016 in Kolkata. The bedazzling works of the two amazing designer duos, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna, and Falguni & Shane Peacock were on display at ITC Sonar. “Being multi-faceted, dynamic and constantly surprising the world is the essence of ‘taste life in style’ for our consumers,’ said Mr. Raja Banerji, Assistant Vice President, Pernod Ricard India. He describes Blenders Pride Fashion Tour as ‘the most definitive expressions of style and good taste’, and adds that it “brings the same alive through multiple reflections of style, with an eclectic mix of the most stylish in fashion, music, and Bollywood. Blenders Pride Fashion Tour continues to deliver a never seen before and exciting experience to the consumers.”
Speaking about their ‘Metallique Maze’ collection, designers Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna said, “Greatly influenced by modern contemporary art, we have paid great emphasis on detailing, drawing inspiration from linear structures and geometric lines. This collection reinvents cocktail dressing and is a must have to make a style statement.” Falguni &Shane Peacock said, “Our collection – ‘PRISM’ artistically blends international weaves with a futuristic take on embellishments. The color story dabbles predominantly in dark jewel tones keeping in symphony with quintessential twentieth century.” They further added, “Casting modernity, we have crafted an international yet exquisite collection for a woman who likes to embrace a masterpiece.” Both pairs feel that #bpft2016 is the perfect platform for their collections, as they sync with Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016 theme, ‘multiple reflections of style’.
As promised, the event revealed some stunning numbers by the two designer duos. I felt that they were quite bold. The first thing I noticed was all the fusion going on in the different designs, which was quite fascinating for me. I could spot an amazing blend of Indian with western forms, a fusion of classic favourites with modern styles. For instance, I absolutely fell in love with Falguni & Shane Peacock’s modern take on gowns, adding sheer and embellishments in just the right amount. Their use of lines and patterns on the dresses to for a sleek silhouette was very impressive. Their items were straight out of fairy-tales. Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna’s collection included items that I could totally see in my wardrobe: unique cuts and patterns jazzing up everyday outfits, dresses and jumpsuits to rock those evening parties, fusion wear to stand out in every crowd!
Bipasha Basu – The Showstopper
And, how can I forget the ravishing Bipasha Basu? She was the star of the event, the showstopper who brought out gasps, and took everyone’s breath away. She looked stunning in a Falguni & Shane Peacock number that accentuated and flaunted her curves in just the most desirable way. As she walked down the ramp, she looked like a dream, showing off the beautiful gown, and then introducing the designers to the guests and the media, as well as Madboy/Mink, whose music had kept the spirit alive throughout the show.
Bipasha Basu – The Stunner of A Special Kind
Like most people present at the first Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016 show, I was floored by Bipasha. But, probably not for the same reasons. Sure, she had the aura of a diva and looked absolutely stunning. But, that’s what was expected of her. But for me, it was something else. Bollywood’s fitness queen (whose circuit-training videos on YouTube totally work, BTW) has always been considered the sultry siren of the industry. And yet, she looked nothing like the conventional and accepted standard of beauty or health. She is curvy, unlike the models who preceded her. She reminded me that curves can be beautiful, too, and they don’t mean that the person is unfit.
My visit to the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016 was special. For one, showstopper Bipasha Basu confidently flaunted a more relatable body shape, with curves and all. While it’s perfect, it isn’t an example of impossible standards of beauty or fitness, which she redefined. Secondly, I spent hours talking, making new friends and catching up with old ones. It was interesting how people perceived the same event differently. Thirdly, attending a fashion event of such stature was enriching and liberating. The collections inspired and encouraged me to be express myself through fashion. I had gathered the courage to wear an unconventional outfit. I paired a very Indian pair of Dhoti pants with a western blazer and a turtleneck top. It was a blend of western and Indian, formal and casual, patterns and solids. Besides, it was quite androgynous – in an unusual way. Altogether, it was a night to remember.
The Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2016’s next show will be in Gurgaon at Lawns, DLF Golf & Country Club, on 2nd December 2016, featuring the works of Rajesh Pratap Singh, and Shantanu & Nikhil. This will be followed by the Mumbai show on 10th at Grand Lawns, Grand Hyath, showcasing a Manish Malhotra collection. The final event will be in Bengaluru on 17th at The Leela Palace, with the works of Masaba, and once again Falguni & Shane Peacock on display.
