Bloggers Meet at Masala Wok by Red Hot Chilli Pepper

If you live in Kolkata, and love Chinese, then Red Hot Chilli Pepper is no stranger to you. It has remained a popular destination for 17 years now. Having accomplished this amazing feat, it has now come up with a new restaurant in Chandni Chowk. As the usage of the words ‘Masala’ and ‘Wok’ indicate, Masala Wok by Red Hot Chilli Pepper specializes in North Indian, besides Chinese. Here’s a brief look at the restaurant, based on the items I tried from their menu.

I joined my blogger friends from Panch Phoron for a sumptuous lunch, as Masala Wok by Red Hot Chilli Pepper played host. The restaurant is in the 1st floor of Hiinnd Cinema, located on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, Chandni Chowk. The restaurant has a contemporary décor, with quite a quirky touch, with fun posters. What I particularly liked is the window stretching along the wall to overlook the main road. The tiny herbs and plants lining the window sill, earthy colours on walls and furniture, sunlight flowing in through the window together created a rejuvenating ambience.

Our lunch spread started with some refreshing drinks, including delicious fruity mocktails, chocolate shake, etc. as we munched on some delicious starters. After that, we moved on to the main course, which included both Indian and Asian dishes.

This dish contained fresh slices of fish delicately pan fried and tossed with onions, chillies and garlic. Sweet and spicy at the same time, you’ll love it if you enjoy a touch of sweetness in their savoury dishes.

A starter of crispy prawns tossed in a homemade garlic infused spicy sauce, it’s again a lovely dish for those who love their savoury items a little sweet. The flavours of garlic and prawns made beautiful combo!

STARTERS (Indian)

Murg Malai Kabab

It contained char-grilled chicken morsels with cream and cheese, infused with green cardamoms. It had a creamy deliciousness, but it could have a little more of the smoothness expected from a kabab.

Paneer Tikka Angara

This is a dish of tender cottage cheese cubes, which are first marinated with yoghurt and Indian spices, and then cooked in a clay oven. I enjoyed the taste the pungency of mustard oil in every bite.

Bhatti Ke Badami Alu

This starter dish contained baby potatoes with the flavour of almond. They are marinated with Indian spices, and then cooked in a tandoor. It had a tangy-spicy taste, and tickled the tongue in a delicious way.

Crumb Fried Fish

Fresh fish fillets marinated with coriander, green chillies and Indian mustard are coated in crumbs, and then fried. Interestingly, I found a hint with a paturi, with a subtle tang, and the flavour of mustard.

MAIN COURSE (Oriental)

We tried both Chinese and Thai dishes. Since Thai curries taste best with plain rice, we thought it’s best not to meddle with the happy couple. And, the Chinese delights paired with Mix Meat Sichuan Fried Rice and Mix Meat Chilli Garlic Noodles.

Thai Curries

Our Oriental menu began with Thai Red Curries, both red and green. They had beautiful flavours and tastes, but the consistency was quite thin. There was also a lack of sufficient amount of coconut in both.

Slice Fish in Oyster Sauce

This dish had fish slices delicately cooked in an oyster-flavoured sauce, with button mushrooms. The fish pieces had a soft texture, and had a gentle hint of sweetness which, thankfully, didn’t overpower the taste.

Dice Chicken in Black Bean Sauce

This was a dish of diced up chicken, cooked in a black fermented bean sauce. I’ll admit that it was quite a tasty dish in general, but I had expected more than what I got in terms of flavour and taste.

Murg Makkhan Wala

A dish with an authentic North-Indian taste, it had chicken morsels which are first char-grilled and then cooked in creamy rich tomato gravy. I loved the creamy gravy, and the buttery texture of the chicken.

Bhuna Gosht

A main course dish of tender pieces of lamb on the bone, prepared by simmering them in a gravy of brown onion base, and flavoured rich Indian spices, this was the highlight of the lunch at Masala Wok by red Hot Chilli Pepper. The richly flavoured meat fell off the bones and melted in the mouth!

DESSERT

Our meal came to an end with some beautiful desserts: Elaichi Malpua, Honey Darsaan and Toffee Walnut. This was just the sweet conclusion that such a grand meal called for, as we mixed and matched them for a perfect combination of desserts from different cuisines.

Final Verdict

I’ll suggest you talk about how sweet you want your dishes, especially before ordering the Chinese items. In conclusion, I think this is a lovely place to enjoy a casual meal with friends and family. There’s a wide range of items to choose from, and is a good answer to the question of wat to try between Indian and Chinese, which often bugs a large group of diners!
