Bloggers Meet for the Opening Dinner at Buddha Smile

If you live in Kolkata, and you are a foodie, then you probably love Chinese. I, for one, particularly enthusiastic about it. The opening of a new Chinese restaurant somewhere close by is the definition of ‘good news’ for me. And, the feelings that rise from my stomach and fill my heart when that place puts good food on my plate are the defnitions of happiness and contentment. Recently, I received an invitation to join the opening dinner at Buddha Smile, a new restaurant in Tollygunge. And, as you must have already guessed, I excitedly went to attend the invitation, in pursuit of the said happiness and contentment!

Location and Ambience

Buddha Smile is located in Tollygunge. To put it simply, you need to reach Netaji Nagar Bus Stop, if you’re taking the NSC Bose Road, like I did. Then, walk straight ahead to the Netaji Statue, in front on Bank of Baroda, and take the lane on the left. Keep going; the restaurant will be on your left. I found it a little difficult to find it, thanks to the uncooperative locals. Anyway, once I reached, the beautiful restaurant quickly changed my mood. The Chinese hanging lanterns, the surreal Buddha painted on the wall, and the view of the road on which it is located, seen through the glass wall of the restaurant – I absolutely adored the ambience.

Food

We were greeted with a glass of fresh lime soda. And soon, the food started arriving – appetising, beautiful food that can make the mouth all watery. And, I dug in! We tried different pork, chicken and prawn dishes, which were served with Mushroom Moon Fan, and Sweet and Sour Noodles.

When I try Chinese, my aim is to get flavours and tastes beyond those of soya sauce and vinegar. It’s disappointing when the different black sauce dishes taste more or less the same, and the white sauces are all bland and floury. Thankfully, Buddha Smile presented dishes which were all different from each other, and in a good way.

1. Dragon Chicken

I can vouch that it’s the appropriate name. WOOH! It’s spicy enough to make you feel like you can breathe out fire! And, it’s so delicious, you won’t even be able to stop! End result – you down chicken pieces and turn into a dragon! Also, I just loved the crunch of the cashew nuts, and the texture it added.

2. Bar-Be-Q Pork Ribs

These were the highlight of the evening. The meat was deliciously succulent. It fell off the bones and melted in the mouth. The sticky barbeque sauce had a smooth sweetness, with the flavours of the Chinese spices beautifully infused in every mouthful. Just the right reason to dig in with the fingers!

3. Roast Pork Chilli

I love pork. I love Chinese. So, I was naturally excited to try this dish pork dish during my dinner at Buddha Smile. And, thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed! I loved how the slivers of pork were fresh and soft, and the flavour of the meat was intact, to give an amazing Chinese preparation.

4. Singapore Prawn

Yet another dish that evening packed with a lot of heat, this prawn preparation was an absolute beauty to taste. Fresh, beautifully cooked prawns in a spicy sauce that will make smoke come out of the ears, while totally making you drool. With the winter months setting in, I think this dish is a must-have.

5. Spicy Lemon Chicken

My first reaction to the idea of trying lemon dishes at new places is always fear. What if it is too sour, too bland, too sweet? Buddha Smile’s Spicy Lemon Chicken felt like an edible embodiment of romance in the mouth. And, it had the perfect lemony touch, with just the right bit of heat to cut off any excess sweetness or sourness.

Dessert: Fried Ice Cream

We tried their Fried Ice Cream for dessert. And, as it is evident from the name, this dessert is unique. But, novel as it is, I thought that the item could taste better if the outer coating had been a little thinner. I found it a little doughy, and the coating got soggier near the end. Perhaps, a smaller scoop of ice cream will help to maintain the crispiness, to do justice to the ‘fried’ part of it. Nonetheless, it was a delicious end to our sumptuous meal.

My Verdict

My dinner at Buddha Smile tells me that this place is going to be a favourite among those who love Chinese food. The warm service of the staff was just the right addition to make my evening fulfilling. I’ll definitely be returning!
