Burnt Garlic in Priya Cinema Building: New Destination for Good Food and Drinks!

As a foodie, I’m lucky to be living in Kolkata. I get to try new restaurants every day. The city of foodies is coming of age; while, for a long time, being a foodie meant being able to gobble up 30 servings of rice and downing 15 glasses of wine in one sitting, the definition has changed. Kolkatans are now ready to explore unknown cuisines, try new flavours and techniques, and know what’s on their plate; they aren’t afraid to be adventurous. And, yes. There are restaurants that cater to different kinds of food-lovers. But, in my observation, many restaurants, in their quest to stand out and satisfy the unique palates of customers, shift from the main objective – to serve real food: food that can touch the soul of any diner. Luckily, I found a new place committed to serving good food and drinks – Burnt Garlic in Priya Cinema Building!

Location and Ambience

“Burnt Garlic”… When a restaurant has such a flavourful name, I had to make sure to visit it. Thankfully, I received an invitation to attend a bloggers’ meet at the restaurant. The place is easy to locate. It is on the ground floor of the well-known Priya Cinema Building in Deshapriya Park. Now, who doesn’t know this South Kolkata landmark? The place has a fun decor, which, even in the mood lighting, creates quite a pop. All the colourful rolling pins hanging everywhere and the painted discs on walls are a visual treat. And, I really loved the music! They played a fusion music, especially the trendy new numbers where Bollywood and Western pop songs are joined together.

Food and Drinks

Our food and drinks arrived soon. Frankly, I was not expecting much, based on the reviews I had read. So, I was pleasantly and hugely surprised by everything that I tasted that afternoon. And, I mean everything.

Salad

The first salad we tried that evening was a Caesar Salad – with a twist! Loaded with olives and cherry tomatoes, it had the beautiful flavours of burnt garlic and a unique honey mustard dressing, while the nachos added a lovely crunch in every bite. Then came the Savour Ita speciality of the restaurant, the crunchy Iceberg and peppery Arugula, along with Jalapeno, Orange dressing, and a dash of sugar. Every mouthful tasted absolutely fresh!

Soup

First came the Cream of Mushroom soup, and I fell in true love! What a flavoursome, soul-quenching bowl of deliciousness it was! And, despite the richness of the cream, it was really light. The Broccoli and Spinach Soup, another Burnt Garlic speciality, came next. This one could not reach the level set by its predecessor, unfortunately. It thought that the ‘leafy’ flavour in the soup from all the greens was a little too strong; it almost tasted like salad. I quite like the flavours that spinach and broccoli give off, after being cooked; sadly those were missing.

Finger Food

I swear, if I had not had the bloggers’ meet menu in front of me to remind me how long the list of items was, I would have probably gobbled more of the starters. The Fish in Thai Chilli Sauce was juicy and delicious, with just the right amount of sweetness for a savoury dish. The Coriander Chicken, another BG special, was a kebab dish, with succulent pieces of chicken melting in the mouth. Even the humble-looking Mushroom Salt and Pepper Fries, with the crispy outside and satiny mushrooms inside, were a delight to taste!

Pasta

I have heard that Italians consider it a sin to cook seafood with cheese. Having tasted Just Prawns, the Spaghetti dish in Coriander Sauce, at Burnt Garlic, I realised that I would much rather be in hell if this is what sin tastes like. It was sinfully creamy, with the delightful flavours of prawns and coriander. Absolutely delicious!

Pizza

I have tried lamb bolognese before, but never have I seen it getting combined with a pizza until I tried the Lamb Bolognese Pizza at BG. It was a cheesy delight with a thin crust and a topping of lamb bolognese and rocket leaves. Quite a unique set of flavours for a pizza, I must say!

Mains

Out of our long list of mains, I can’t decide which one I liked most. We started with the Mushroom and Artichoke Crepe with Thyme Cream Sauce. I could hardly taste the crepe, but that’s not reason enough for me to forget what a delectable dish this was! The flavours and textures of mushroom, in the heavenly sauce – it had absolutely everything to win my heart! After that came the Porcini Chicken with potato and greens, another dish that was amazingly moreish dish, with soft chicken that melted in the mouth! The next dish turned out to be just the appropriate predecessor: the Pan-Seared Lemon Butter Bhetki, a BG speciality. The flavoursome fish, with the lemony, buttery goodness, was nothing but gorgeous.

Our main course came to an end with a beautiful Oriental combination of Kung Pao Chicken and Thai Fried Rice. As a huge fan of Oriental food, I thought this was a good way to end the list of savoury items. the dishes were beautifully cooked; while the chicken had the perfect texture and the balance of tastes seemed tailor-made for me, the rice was a scrumptious complement to the Kung Pao Chicken. Plus, the chicken was just perfectly cooked to keep all the juiciness intact.

Dessert

For dessert, we had two beauties, ending the lunch on a sweet note. We started with a Blueberry Cheese Cake,  a beautiful dessert with the creamy richness of cheese, and then moved on to the Caramel Cake with Hot Toffee Sauce, a soft, spongy cake with a sticky top. What a lovely ending to the sumptuous lunch we had at Burnt Garlic!

Cocktail

The lunch included the most incredibly delicious cocktails. I love cocktails, and when I find a glass that tastes unique and has the right kick, it makes my day. The first one I tried here was the Mango Coconut Dauquiri, whipped up with rich, thick mango pulp and Malibu rum,to give it a strong, coconutty punch. Then came the Sugarcane Mai Tai with a minty freshness; and, as the name suggests, sweet-toothed drinkers will find this drink delightful. Our next drink was the Kiwi and Strawberry Mojito, and for a second, I didn’t want to touch it, because it was that beautiful, with the layers of green and pink! Upon drinking, I realised that it tastes as good as it looks!

The next drink, the Curry Patta Coconut Vodkatini, scared me slightly with its name. Vodka doesn’t always agree with me; and, I was slightly intimidated to try a drink with Curry Leaves in it. But I finally decided to take a sip, and I’m so glad I did! I just couldn’t put the glass down. The flavour of the leaves worked out so brilliantly in the drink, it felt like the work of a genius! Another incredible drink was the Posto Bata Gondhoraj Ghol. Poppy Seeds and Kaffir Lime are both favourites of any Bangali. But, to put them in a drink was a gutsy move on the part of the bartender who developed this recipe. But, it was a genuinely good move that gave birth to a drink with a strong aroma that you surely haven’t tasted before. This was surprisingly good!

Final Verdict

Burnt Garlic turned out to be a surprise for me. Yes, I can say a million good things about the service, hospitality, ambience, decor, etc., but everyone has a lot t say about these things when it comes to this restaurant. What impressed me is their food! Be it the vegetarian dishes or the non-veg ones, the cocktails or the desserts, almost everything they served blew my mind with the brilliance of tastes, and flavours. There was uniqueness and simplicity in just the right amounts. The next time I’ll have a craving for nothing but good food, accompanied by awesome cocktails, I’ll definitely go to Burnt Garlic. It’s a must-visit for all true foodies!
