Cakes and Bakes at The Baker’s Box in Kolkata

Everything about Kolkata is believed as sweet and sugary. We Kolkatans are the sweetest, politest people you’ll meet. Bengali, the language of most of the citizens, is, hands down, the sweetest, most melodious one you’ll hear, at least in India. Our food often has a gentle touch of sugar, even the savoury dishes. And, let’s not even get started on our desserts! We’re so obsessed with desserts that we fought for the position of Rosogolla’s originator! We love sweets from all across the world, from Ghari to Gingerbread. We love every local sweet shop, every bakery. And, it’s time we welcome The Baker’s Box in Kolkata with open arms, too!

The Baker’s Box operates from its office in Salt Lake Sector 1, which acts as their takeaway stop for customers to pick up their orders. You can also receive the delivery of your order at your doorstep. From starters to desserts, you get a wide variety with them. You can even order full meals with them, be it Thai, Chinese or Mexican. And, it’s all vegetarian! I was there to enjoy a tasting of some of their desserts and savoury snacks.

Cheese Samosa – It looks like a cute little version of the samosas that we have. But, it’s only when you bite into it that the misconception changes. While the outer coating has a smoother texture than the usual puffy one, and inside is a soft goo of cheese! I loved it, but thought it could do with just a little more variety of taste. Perhaps biting into a corn or jalapeño every now and then would have made it perfect.

Mini Pesto Pizza – These were mini pizzas had a crunchy base, and had a flavourful pesto sauce smeared across it, with the topping of green peppers, olives, etc. The pungent flavours of the olive oil, basil leaves and garlic came through strongly, giving this pizza a distinct taste. What I found particularly unique about these pizzas is their crust, which had a crunch. These handheld pizzas are a must-try!

Lemon Pound Cake – I love lemony desserts, and this pound cake turned out to be really delicious, with a discernible tang. I felt it was slightly sweeter than I would have liked, but I loved it, nonetheless!

Death by Chocolate – Well, if chocolate can kill, then this is how I would like to go. Soft, spongy, and covered in chocolate powder, with layers of mousse, this sinful piece is only for the lovers of dark chocolate.

Crème Brûlée – The beautiful, glassy layer of burnt caramel breaks with the sweetest melody at the stroke of the spoon and gives way to the lightest, silkiest custard base. This was the highlight of the day for me!

Hamper, and Other Items

We also tried some of the other items like the Gulab Jamun Cake which they are still working on, and the the Lavash Crackers with Hummus in between the sweet delights. Aside from the lovely tasting for us bloggers from Panch Phoron at The Baker’s Box in Kolkata, each of us left with an amazing hamper of their lovely items which included a) Cheese Sticks, which I really loved for their crunchiness, though there was a slight lack of cheesiness; b) Oats and Dark Chocolate Muffins, which had quite a unique texture; and c) Molten Lava Cakes, which were spongy outside, and had a delicious chocolaty filling inside.
