Hot New Winter Menu at Au Bon Pain, Park Street

They say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is, after all, the first meal every morning. Now that the morning calls for nothing but warm tea in bed while still wrapped in a blanket, the only reason to bed is usually a delicious arrangement of breakfast. And, the Winter Hotties on the new Winter Menu at Au Bon Pain seem to be just the right way to lure a Kolkatan out of bed!

I was at the American fast-casual bakery and café chain’s Park Street outlet for the launch of the new winter menu, with my blogger friends from Panch Phoron. And, I must say, the first look was quite an interesting one! The Winter Hotties include veg and non-veg items, cookies, and refreshing drinks, all available alongside the old favourites.

There’s very little that needs to be said about Au Bon Pain’s ambience and décor. So, I’ll straight away go to the items I tried from the Winter Menu at Au Bon Pain.

Egg Start-WICH

I started with the Egg Start-WICH, which was basically an egg sandwich. A creamy centre of eggs, roasted veggies and gooey mozzarella, spiced with red pepper pesto, between toasted ciabatta bread – all beautifully balanced – it was one of my favourites among the Winter Hotties.

Harvest Chicken Salad

This delicious salad is packed with protein, greens, fat and carbs, all in the right amounts. It has grilled chicken with Balsamic tahini, roasted spiced pumpkin, feta cheese, roasted almonds, pumpkin seeds and assorted greens. It comes in a plastic box, perfect for a complete meal on the go!

Chicken Flavour Burst

This is one of the most unique breakfast items I have tasted. It’s actually a sandwich, with a filling of grilled chicken, emmental cheese and spinach. The ‘burst’ of flavours which cut the creaminess of the chicken, cheese and spinach on baguette was of pickled red onion and mango peri peri.

Non-Veg Platter

This breakfast assortment includes egg and pesto on croissant, chicken sausage, and a small fruit, and either a cappuccino or fruit juice. The sandwich could do with more seasoning. The ‘half’ of the one and a half sausage clearly needed a neater presentation: my friend thought I had started eating it.

Mulled Wine

The drink was like a soft touch of warm on a cold morning. It had the sweetness of honey, and was unlike any warm drink I have tasted before. Now, I’ve never tried mulled wine before, but know that it should have a spicy, orangey undertone. But Au Bon Pain’s Mulled Wine lacked those flavours.

Bubble Tea

Now, this turned out to be an interesting drink, in terms of taste and texture. When you take a sip with a straw, the last things left in your mouth after the iced tea are a few tiny balls, which will then burst, and voila! There’s an explosion of flavours and tangy sweetness on your tongue!

Dark Lava Meltdown

A nice, soft cake, with a melting centre, full of rich, chocolaty goo, topped with minty cream – what could go wrong in this? It’s the perfect treat in the morning for chocolate lovers, and if you have a sweet tooth, don’t forget to take a large spoonful of the cream with every bite!

Wheat & Coconut Cookie

Half of it is coated with chocolate, which goes well with the chocolate flavour. The texture, however, didn’t quite impress me. It was a little dense, and slightly on the drier side. I think it would have tasted good with a tall glass of warm milk. Each cookie is quite large in size, so don’t go ordering to0 many.
