ILPA Show 2017: Bringing Leather on the Ramp, and Respect to the Ostracised

Donatella Vesace, vice-president and chief designer of the Versace Group once said, “If I could dress anyone, I’d like to dress the Queen – she can handle anything. I’d put her in black – she never wears black – and add a little leather, maybe. A little rock n’ roll.” Be it in the form of a biker jacket or a pair of strappy heels, an embellished bag to go with the LBD, or a simple belt to pull the office look together, leather is considered versatile, internationally. The Indian fashion industry has always caught up with the world, and created its own mark; no wonder the Indian Leather Products Association (ILPA) recently came up with a concept that’s innovative in many ways. The ILPA Show 2017 not only brought the stylishness of leather to the ramp but also collaborated with FDDI to give prisoners a new lease on a life of respect.

Since 1987, the ILPA, with its head office in Kolkata, has provided a platform for merchant-exporters and manufacturer-exporters, and worked actively for the development of the leather sector of India. It puts special emphasis on detailed survey and study of the market, both domestic and international, as well as on marketing and building public relations through buyer-seller meets, workshops, participation in exhibitions and fairs, etc. This time around, it has taken a step to acquaint the fashion enthusiasts of Kolkata with the wonder that is leather, through an extravagant fashion show, Leather on the Ramp, to inculcate the latest trends of fashion in their fresh new collections. In the process of doing so, the ILPA also took a big step in performing its social duty as a corporate organisation, by including prisoners in their huge project, besides forming a charity.

Amazing Collections

Each collection brought something unique, and the designs looked appropriate for different occasions and settings in our everyday lives. I absolutely loved how fresh these designs were! While putting an outfit together, we often get lazy about accessories. But, it’s that one belt, the right bag, the appropriate colour of shows that can pull the whole look together. It can add the ‘wow’ factor. And, the collections at the ILPA Show 2017 offered a huge inspiration. I rediscovered the versatility of leather. I mean, who would have imagined leather accessories to go with a summer look comprising hot pants and tank tops? Or, that the laptop bag we carry to work can become a style statement? I have new personal style goals, and it’s all about leather!

The ‘Wow’ Factor of ILPA Show 2017

But, is it just the style factor that has me raving about the show? Being who I am, one of my reasons to get involved in fashion is to see its humanitarian side. I like to see that the industry isn’t just obsessed with high cheekbones and noses done right by rhinoplasty. I like to tell people that there’s another side of the industry that’s growing. And, the initiative of ILPA won me over. It showcased the works by prisoners. By doing so, it gave an opportunity to an otherwise ostracised section of the society to start afresh. Receiving a vocational training and do something fruitful – isn’t that the purpose of a correctional centre? The ILPA Show 2017 gave these people a chance to earn respect, through fashion, glamour and jazz. For me, it was the best of best of both worlds.
