Indian Coastal Menu at Pappadam in Kolkata

Ask anyone who doesn’t live in the coastal area about the food available along the coastline of almost 8000 km, and you will hear some common words: curry leaves, coconuts, vegetarian, etc. According to the misconception of most, non-veg food is non-existent in coastal areas. At best, a rare few people will come up with Bombay duck or Pork Vindaloo. Thankfully, to rid the minds of Kolkata’s foodies from ideas, Pappadam is here! If you’re one of the people who have little or no idea about the wide range of cuisines and delicacies from near the coast of India, then the Indian coastal menu at Pappadam in Kolkata will completely change your mind.

I was once one of those people little knowledge about the coastal food of India, until, a month ago, I tried a wide variety of it in the heart of Kolkata. So, when I received the invitation to join my blogger friends from Panch Phoron at Pappadam, I just had to go! After all, the gates had opened, and this was a whole new world to explore! So, without hesitation, I reached the lane in the Southern Avenue area, looking for good food. What I found was a little more than just that.

LOCATION AND AMBIENCE

Pappadam is located along SR Das Road behind the office of Public Service Commission. It stands where the Biriyani Company once used to be. You can’t possibly miss the pretty restaurant, with its outside wall, roof, window and door all painted brightly, like it’s straight out of a storybook! As I stepped inside, I found something even more charming. The quaint restaurant is built inside a house, and it retains the homeliness quite perfectly. In fact, that’s probably the USP of the ambience of Pappadam. Kanjeevaram sarees turned into curtains, wooden tables, chairs, couch, doors and window panels, Tanjore dancing doll, brass showpieces, bronze utensils – it’s like walking into the dining room of a Tamilian family.

MY FAVOURITES

By the tone that I have already set so far, you’ve probably understood by now that I have become a huge fan of Pappadam. Everything that I tried that day from the coastal menu at Pappadam was almost perfect, and left me with nothing to complain about. Every item had a unique hint of spices and herbs, be it gunpowder, curry leaves, desi ghee or roasted chilli! Aside from the tastes and flavours, Pappadam also managed to reach perfection with the quality and texture of the meat, fish, seafood, etc. But, among the items I gorged on, a few stood out, and I think I can smell and taste them in my dreams!

Chicken 65

It’s a common name on the menu of Indian restaurants. But, Pappadam’ s version turned out to be the best I’ve tried. The flavour of red chilli came through wonderfully, and left a tingling sensation on the tongue. Every crunchy bite gave way to melt-in-your-mouth chicken cooked to perfection!

Squid Kali Mirch

I LOOVVE squids. And, this dish from the coastal menu at Pappadam made me fall in love with this animal all over again! Soft, buttery rings of squid, each coated with the perfectly aerated batter to give an amazing contrast of textures with a peppery heat – straight from heaven, I tell you!

Mutton Stew

Being a Bangali, the only way I have grown up loving mutton is in a red gravy, full of rich spices, with fat floating on top. And yet, the mutton stew seemed to trickle right down to my soul! Yes, I would call it a comfort food. I tried with appam, and it was a match made in heaven!

Coorgi Roast Crab

There’s beauty in simplicity, they say; this dish justifies the saying. It’s a modest preparation where the crab remains the hero, as it sits in a sea of chopped garlic and melted butter. Imagine the combined flavours of crab, butter and garlic! This crab preparation and neev dosa made an amazing couple!

Veg Moilee

I cannot believe that there’s a vegetarian dish on my list of recommendations, but it is. It was a dish that paired excellently with the two varieties of rice. The veg moilee had an assortment of veggies in a gravy with a delicious undertone of flavours. It’s a must-have at Pappadam, trust me!

I’ll add here that every other dish had its own speciality. The gunpowder in the paneer koliwada, the Goan pomfret curry and the perfectly cooked pieces of prawn gassi with Malabar paratha, the ‘un-fishy’ freshness of the surmai thakrey, and finally the sweet spiciness of saffron and cardamom in the desserts – I was in heaven! I even loved the two different rice preparations. The tomato rice had just the perfect balance of sweetness and tang, while the flavour of the lemon rice was not too overpowering and complemented the sides beautifully.

FINAL VERDICT

I am generally a little biased towards Oriental and Continental cuisines. Choosing Indian is usually for a change of tastes for me. But, having tried the gastronomic delights from the coastal menu at Pappadam, I can safely say that I am in love! There are 9 states and 2 union territories in India with a coastline, besides 2 island territories, and each has its unique style of cooking. I can’t believe that this realisation just dawned upon me! Anyway, what matters is, I now have a range of delicacies to enjoy. And, Pappadam is definitely going to see a lot more of me! But I must add that it was more than just food. Besides the warm welcome by the owner, there was something snug and intimate in this homestyle restaurant, which made me feel comfortable. Dining there with friends was indeed a special experience, and I would love to go back for more of that, as well.
