A little bit about Balaram Mullick and Radharam Mullick
The sweet shop of Balaram Mullick has been putting smile on the faces and delicious sweets in the mouths of Mishti-hungry inhabitants of Bengal for more than a century. It was established in the year 1885, roghly five years after its founder Ganesh Chandra Mullick came to Kolkata from Hooghly’s Konnagar, armed with the knowledge of sweet-making. He worked for three whole years, after which his service was terminated. So, he decided to try his luck at entrepreneurship. On a small piece of land in Bhowanipore which he rented from the renowned Harlalkar family of Bengal, he started making and selling sweets. Thus began the journey of Balaram Mullick, the biggest sweet shop in the city.
Pioneers in Business and Sweets
One of the biggest decisions by the founder was to pick Bhowanipore. He looked into the future and realized that in a less crowded area like Bhowanipore, he would receive little competition, and hence be able to establish monopoly as a sweet-maker. This was, without a doubt, a great idea. Over the years, this chain of sweet shops has thrived, thanks to one amazing idea after the other. Today, it operates successfully, thanks to their modern ideas and innovative cooking methods. The result? Sweets that are new in taste, texture and even flavours, prepared with utmost care for hygiene.
Some major innovations have been put to use. Balaram Mullick is more than just a sweet shop. The entire family, including the women, have contributed constantly in terms of labour and ideas, for a smooth operation of a family business. That’s what it looks like behind the scenes at Radharam Mullick. What we get is a wide range of mouth-watering sweets, as well as other Bengali and Indian snacks. While some of these are authentically Bengali, others are fusions with western tastes and flavours.
This year, to make Bhaiphnota a little more special, Balaram Mullick has come up with some amazing sweets. Their menu includes gustatory delights like Madhuparni, Khaja, Mango Chiqui, Khirer 2-in-1 Roll, Ananda Anaras, Khirer Bati, Badamika and Baked Sandesh!
Don’t forget that it’s Diwali and Kali Puja, too. So, this festive season, Balaram Mullick is the place to be at. The items on the Bhaiphnota special sweets by Balaram Mullick and Radharam Mullick are full of new flavours and tastes.
