My First Experience of Cake Mixing at Vedic Village

I have always had a thing for Christmas, and Christmas cakes. It’s my experiences of celebrating the festival in my school with piano, carols, and Christmas trees, as well as my precious memories of looking for gifts all around the house on Christmas morning and watching Home Alone and winter-special cartoons all day, which make Christmas so special for me. And, an important part of these memories and experiences was the cake – more specifically, the fruit cakes. So, when I received an invitation to attend the cake mixing ceremony at Vedic Village, I was absolutely thrilled!

About Cake Mixing

A drop in the mercury levels is a clear sign that Christmas is near. That’s when all the restaurants, bakeries, etc. start their cake mixing. Despite what the name suggests, this pre-Christmas ceremony is actually all about mixing dry fruits for cakes with fruit juices, liquor, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. These fruits are then left to marinate in all things nice so that they soak up the flavours and tastes before they are finally added to the actual cake batter. So, now you know what gives your Christmas cakes so unique and Christmassy, with tastes and flavours that you cannot get at any other time of the year!

My Experience

My first ever cake mixing ceremony at Vedic Village was special in more ways than one. For one, the event began with children. CINI (Child in Need Institute), an NGO working to help society’s deprived children in getting an education, and a reason to smile, brought around twenty kids to the cake mixing ceremony at Vedic Village. Of course, they were only allowed to mix fruit juices with the dry fruits. They didn’t need to tell us how happy they were to be a part of this. Their smiles were enough.

As for me, I became quite a child. As a kid, Christmas used to start early for me, with choir rehearsals starting in school, buying sugar-covered jelly candies, or as we called them, Jelly Lozenge, from New Market, and making the list of gifts from Santa. I can’t remember when I left those days behind. After a long time, I had a fun start to my winter months at Vedic Village. I got to wear a chef’s hat and an apron. It was messy, noisy and full of laughter. The smell of various liquors mixed together was the single – but very potent – factor making the experience fit for adults.

The mixing ceremony with my blogger friends from Panch Phoron was followed by a tasting of Vedic Village’s new menu and a quick tour of the property before we called it a day. I have nothing but gratitude towards Vedic Village for making my first cake mixing ceremony a memorable experience.

[…] Cake mixing is a fascinating concept for me, especially after I started my winter this year with an incredible one. So, when I received the invitation to join the Cake Mixing at Afraa Deli, I had to go –  with my blogger friends from Panch Phoron. But, little did I know that the charming Gaurav Chakrabarty and the beautiful Ritabhari Chakraborty, starring in the new Bengali movie Colkatay Columbus, along with the fresh face, Suchandra Vaaniya, would be present to dig into the hill of dry fruits, spices, and liquor – and get messy!
