New Rang De Basanti Dhaba Ballygunge Outlet Brings the Best of North Indian Food!

There’s just something about good old Dhaba-style North Indian food in all its rustic, aromatic glory. Every time I think of it, I automatically feel a little hungry and start visualising myself sitting at a Dhaba, digging into all the Ghee-bathed delights. To be honest, North Indian food is one of the top favourites among the foodies of Kolkata. In the middle of a large number of North Indian restaurants in Kolkata, the rapidly growing chain of Rang De Basanti Dhaba is gaining fast popularity, as it presents the simplicity of a dhaba in an urban way. And now, Rang De Basanti Dhaba is in Ballygunge Circular Road, with an enormous outlet, and food that’s just as brilliant as ever!

The new Rang De Basanti Dhaba Ballygunge outlet is in Rowland Row, straight head from the Maulana Abdul Kalam Masjid. The place has an enormous seating area, and the decor is truly fun and quirky, with their signature tractor in the centre of it. I also really loved the light shades in the shapes of steel glasses and kettles. And don’t miss the posters on the wall! And what can I say about the food here? They openly admit that the one thing that they are good at is feeding people, and that’s exactly what they did to me and my other blogger friends at out elaborate lunch in their new outlet.

Our non-veg starters included Masala Murg, Mutton Sikampuri Kebab and Afghani Murg, while the veg appetisers included Achari Mushroom Tikka,  Dahi Ke Kebab and Dadima Ka Paneer Tikka. I have to say, I loved all of these starters. Each had its own combination of flavours. But, if I have to pick my favourites, I think I will have to go with the Afghani Murg with the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture with the subtle flavours, followed by the hot and tangy Masala Chicken with a crispy skin, and the tangy Achari Mushroom Tikka.

Main Course:

For the main course, I tried a bit of both the Kolkata Chicken and the Kolkata Mutton Biriyanis, though there were also options of Masala Kulcha, Tandoori Roti, Butter Naan, and Laccha Parantha. While they are named Kolkata Biriyani, the species and aroma are quite different from our known variant of this dish in Kolkata. It’s much spicier in aroma, with less of ghee dominating the senses. Plus, they were sprinkled generously with cilantro, which is absolutely unseen in Kolkata. However, I must add here that though this is different, this lighter, spicier variant of Biriyani tasted truly delicious.

As sides, we tried the RDBD Special Chicken Bharta, as well as Chicken Chatpata. These went extremely well with the Biriyanis. I particularly loved the Chicken Bharta, a main course dish that was deliciously creamy and flavoured quite subtly. As our server rightly observed, I was more impressed by the dishes that were less spicy. There were also veg options like Jamidari Aloo Dum, Jhal Vali Daal, and Peeli Daal, to be paired with the bread items.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an elaborate menu of North Indian food, and enjoy a fun ambience, come to Rang De Basanti Dhaba and enjoy a sumptuous meal here. You will surely love it here. Don’t forget to end the meal on a royal note with some Gajar Ka Halwa and Shahi Tukda. Chef Joardar, whom I had spoken to during my earlier visit to the RDBD Jessore Road outlet, has a deep love for cooking, and that love is very much evident in every dish served at this urban dhaba. And that’s not it – the effort to make people happy with food, and reach people’s hearts through their stomach, is genuine in every staff member. Don’t for an experience of unpretentious food and service, at Rang De Basanti Dhaba Ballygunge outlet!
