Palm Oil Awareness Campaign: Kolkata Bloggers Meet for Food Hunt!

At a time when people are obsessed with what they put into their mouth, our cooking oil is something we all pay attention to. The commercials on the television which appear at intervals of two seconds inform us of all the health benefits of different kinds of oils. From olive oil to mustard oil, from sunflower seed oil to rice bran oil, our options are plenty. But how many of us have a thorough knowledge of palm oil? Not many, I’m sure. And, to spread some information about another option of a cooking oil, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) brought together several bloggers of Kolkata under one roof. The Palm Oil Awareness Campaign by MPOC was a bloggers meet cum food hunt event, and it was a fun-filled Sunday!

We all met at Barbecue Nation in the morning, where the representative of MPOC, Bhavna Shah, addressed us, and talked about Palm oil. She gave us some basic information about the product and MPOC. Malaysian Palm Oil has just turned 100, and during this time, the product has found a place, mainly in the food industry. And yet, we hardly have any awareness about. She gave us information about how this product is free from trans-fat and cholesterol, and is an excellent source of pro-Vitamin A carotenoids, to name a few. She also addressed the misconceptions and criticisms regarding palm oil and its cultivation process, before we moved on to the food hunt.

The Food Hunt

As you can guess, most of us were slightly groggy about missing out the Sunday morning Luchi breakfast and sleeping in late. But, once the activities began, we were all wide awake. As we ran across Park Street area after cracking our first clue that led us to Mocambo, I’m sure the people in the street became wary to see around 30 adults running along the streets like that, but we didn’t care. It was a scavenger hunt, and we were there to win! Anyway, after solving a questionnaire about Palm Oil trivia, we went from Mocambo to Oasis, where our skill as food bloggers was tested. It was a blind food tasting! An incredible challenge, indeed, but I’m proud of the fact that my team and I missed just one ingredient!

Our next stop was Trincas, where the four teams of bloggers participated in a salad making contest, using 5 ingredients! We made our salad, and left the poor Bhavna with the chef of the restaurant to taste it, and went back to where it all started, i.e. Barbeque Nation. Here, a dart board awaited us, because that’s what the final challenge was. I have to say, this was the first time in my life that the pin did not fall off the board! Finally, they declared winning team, but the rest of the bloggers didn’t seem to care much, because we all had fun! The event came to a wonderful end as we gorged on the mouth-watering food of Barbecue Nation, noted as one of the top-rated restaurants in the city.

A Fun Day with the Excuse of Palm Oil Awareness Campaign

All in all, it was a fun Sunday morning. It was more than just some boring awareness campaign about Palm Oil. Bhavna took care of making the presentation precise and interesting. But, more than anything else, it was fun meeting so many people who share the same interest for food, and spending half the day running around and enjoying, without a care in the world. Now, how often do we get to feel like a child that in the middle of all our duties and worries as adults?
