Review: The Coastal Macha New Menu

If I have to name my favourite restaurants in Kolkata, I will, without fail, name The Coastal Macha. I have been to this place several times. It’s one of those few places that brings authentic tastes and flavours from the coastal areas of India to the plates of Kolkata’s foodies, without resorting to Idli and Dosa. Recently, it has added some excellent new items to its menu. Here’s my review of the new items on the menu of The Coastal Macha!

Kokum Cooler

This is a beverage that I bet you haven’t tried anywhere in Kolkata before. It tastes as great as it looks, actually. The drink bears the flavours and tastes of kokum, the fruit of a tree that grows in the Western Ghats of India. It’s the fruit that gives his drink its bring red colour, and it leaves an almost honey-like sweet aftertaste in the mouth. The soda in the drink gives it the fizz that you need to cleanse the palate while devouring the rest of the gorgeous dishes here.

Prawn Koliwada

Perfectly cooked, succulent, melt-in-your-mouth prawns covered in a delicious, crispy coating – what could be more tempting than this? The batter of besan is packed with the robust flavours of spices, with the aromas of asafoetida and fennel coming through beautifully. And it’s so light! I think this dish is the perfect way to tickle your taste-buds.

Squid Xecxec

I love squids, but many places fail to get the texture right, sadly. Thankfully, The Coastal Macha’s squid is absolutely on point. In fact, squid is one thing where this restaurant has improved impressively. The Xecxec, a Goan curry, was full of the the richness of spices which beautifully complements the coconut base of the curry. Absolutely delicious!

Mutton Koli Masala

Koli Masala is a specialty of the Aagri Koli Samaj of Maharashtra. And, I wouldn’t have probably known of this beauty without the Coastal Macha. It was surprisingly light for a mutton dish, and with flavours that felt gentle on the tongue – and on the soul. The pieces where juicy and falling off the bones, with flavours deep inside the fibres.

Bhetki Goan Curry

Bhetki is an all time favourite on mine (no surprise there, of course), and I was absolutely delighted to find that the new menu had a Bhetki dish! I was even more delighted to taste the dish. It had a nice and rich gravy that went well with rice, and the fish fishes were fresh, soft and perfectly cooked. It was one of my top two favourites that afternoon.

Tandoori Devilled Crab

If heaven was food, it would taste like crab meat. My MOST favourite item of the evening was this stunning crab dish. It had crab meat presented in the crab shells, and was a true vision. And the taste! It was sinfully delicious! I think it will go great with an appam. I think, because I just took the spoon and straight away dug into the crab shells.

Final Verdict

If you want to know of some of my other favourites here, read about my previous experience of enjoying the coastal food at The Coastal Macha. Meanwhile, I can say that these new additions are absolute wonders. What I love about this place is that they believe in the food they serve, and don’t change the recipes of their food philosophy just to fit the palate of the diners. What I love even more is that the owners, Sabrina and Piyush, are always working to improve the quality of their food, I have been visiting this place when it was just a month or so old, and I can tell how much of an improvement they have had. Their effort shows, and so does their love for food. The Coastal Macha remains on my list of recommendations, especially after the new items.
