Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha – till 20th September

One of my favourite stand alone restaurants in Kolkata is The Coastal Macha at Southern Avenue. I have spoken about this place many times before, and for good reason! I have remained a patron since the time when the restaurant was taking baby steps. And, every time I visit, I see that they have improved. Co-owner Piyush Shekhar is truly passionate about food, and the passion reflects in his food. To spice things up even more, he has introduced the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha!

The new Sri Lankan Festival at Coastal Macha has brought together a range of dishes from the island country. These dishes are exotic, and yet, they are very Indian in flavours and tastes. The Coastal Macha has maintained a rustic quality in the dishes, which contain some unique combinations of spices and ingredients. And I had the opportunity to try some of those mind-blowing dishes available at the restaurant.

Exotic Dishes with Familiar Flavours at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

I tried Devilled Prawn, Devilled Squid, Mutton Sri Lankan Curry or Elumas Curry, Mutton Kothu Roti, Fish Ambul Thiyal, Jaffua Crab Curry, Dhal Curry, Cashewnut Curry, Yellow Rice, Appam, Egg Appam, Stuffed Rol Roti, and Tender Coconut Pudding. Each and every dish stood out because of the taste, flavour and uniqueness. Honestly, I can’t really pick a favourite among these delectable preparations; they are all must-have dishes.

Mouth-Watering Delicacies at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

Seafood:

The Devilled Prawn and the Devilled Squid are spicy and fragrant. They go very well with both Appam and Yellow Rice. The Jaffua Crab not only looked inviting but also tasted heavenly, with the aroma of the soft, thick crab meat enamouring the senses.  Honestly, I was in seafood heaven! What I love about The Coastal Macha is how soft, succulent and juicy the sea food always is, here. And these dishes were no exception.

Seafood at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

Unique Dishes:

I tried the Mutton Sri Lankan Curry, which was light and packed with flavours. A unique dish was the Mutton Kothu Roti. The thin slivers of bread tasted made it taste like pasta cooked with Indian spices. The Fish Ambul Thiyal, too was special. Piyush thinks that it’s more on an acquired taste, which is not totally untrue. I loved it; it neither had the strong sourness of lemons, nor did it contain the pungency of vinegar. It had the right amount of tang with a hint of sweetness, from tamarind.

Unique Dishes at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

Veg Options:

Among the veg options, there was a Cashewnut Curry. I have had many dishes with cashew nuts adding flavour and texture to dishes, but this is the first dish in which the nuts are the hero – and it was absolutely delish. As for the Dhal Curry, I can say that Coastal Macha is the only place where I can happily pounce upon vegetarian dishes and daals. The thick, coconutty daal paired beautifully with the aromatic rice and Appam.

Veg Options at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

Desserts:

Then, it was time for desserts. The stuffed roti, with shredded coconut inside and honey drizzled on top, came first. I tried my own little experiment and had this roti with the savoury gravy of the crab dish and the daal, and I loved it. If that sounds a little weird to you, just enjoy the rotis as they are. Finally came the Tender Coconut Pudding. It’s taste and texture were very much like the soft flesh inside the tender coconut. I totally fell in love!

Desserts at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha

The Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha will continue till the 20th of September, 2017.

That makes me slightly sad, because I just fell in love with each and every one of the dishes from the Sri Lankan menu. However, there is one ray of hope; Piyush says he might add the items from the Sri Lankan festival to the regular menu of The Coastal Macha, based on popularity. Well, fingers crossed! Meanwhile, don’t forget to drop in at the Southern Avenue restaurant and enjoy the exotic dishes with familiar flavours and tastes at the Sri Lankan Food Festival at Coastal Macha.
