The Bhoj Company: Celebrate Bangaliana with Authentic Food!

I’m a Bangali girl, always fussing over the food I eat. At least once a day, I dislike one of my several meals through the day. At least once a day, my parents hear me saying, “Just because I don’t complain about my food, you don’t even try to cook me something nice.” So, every day, they try to cook something new. But, it’s majorly Bengali or North Indian food; in any case, if they fail at continental or Asian, they’ll hear e complaining again. So, when I go out to eat, I prefer not to eat these cuisines. But, recently, I received an invitation to The Bhoj Company, a Bengali restaurant, and words cannot be enough to describe how happy I am about keeping it!

Location and Ambience at The Bhoj Company

The Bhoj Company has two outlets, one in BBD Bag and the other in Free School Street. I went to the latter, which is in the New Market area, in the lane opposite the fire brigade office. The restaurant is divided into two sections, both with simple, minimalist decor. The place looks like the inside of a modern Bangali household belonging to a family with good taste. The seating is arranged to offer the diners space, privacy and comfort. Their playlist includes classic Bengali songs. like Rabindrasangeet, folk songs, etc., setting the mood for a Bengali meal!

The Bhoj Company specialises in dishes from Dhaka. It’s the kind of food I hear about from people with a Bangladeshi root; it’s the “O-Paar Bangla” cuisine – it’s nothing short of a legend for me! But, this is essentially a restaurant that wants to maintain the authenticity of the Bengali cuisine, and they do so with the favourites of both the Bangals and the Ghotis. I had the opportunity to have a filling meal that included the following dishes:

a) Fish Fry with French Fries and Kasundi
b) Kachki Machher Chorchori
c) Chitol Machher Muitha
d) Chitol Machher Kalia
e) Pabda Machher Dhone Patar Jhal
f) Aar Machher Aloo Begun Bori Diye Jhol
g) Kochu Pata Chingri Bhapa
h) Chingri Malai Curry
i) Mocha Chingri
j) Bhetki Paturi
k) Dhakai Morog Pulao
l) Bhuna Khichuri
m) Sorshe Ilish

Oh, what incredible food! And, needless to say, I could not eat all of them. But I have to say that I have no complaint against a single item I tried, which is a rare thing! Of course, there were some items that totally floored me. The pungency of the Bhetki Paturi can beat wasabi paste, I think. And each and every one of the Chingri dishes was a trip to heaven! I tried the exotic Muitha for the first time in my life, and now I know why it’s such a hit! And, how can I forget the light and flavourful Dhakai Morog with the delicious Pulao. We completed the spread with Mishti Doi, something I prefer to icecreams.
