VR1 Hookah Bar in Kolkata – A Fun Place to Hang Out and Relax

VR1 Hookah Bar in Kolkata – A Fun Place to Hang Out and Relax

I am not much of a hookah bar person. It’s not that I don’t like hookahs, I just don’t like bars. My friends have a reason for that – they say that I am a hundred years old, and all things youthful, fun and energetic are not my thing. And I don’t quite disagree. Besides, I have hardly found good food at hookah parlours, except maybe in just one or two places. So, when I received an invitation to experience an afternoon at VR1 hookah bar in Kolkata I can’t claim I was not reluctant. But, let me start the blog by telling you that VR1 Kolkata has climbed into my stunningly short list of preferred hookah bars in the city.

VR1 hookah bar is located in Hazra Road, near Paramount Nursing Home in Kalighat. It is a rather nondescript building from the outside, but once you climb the stairs, you will be welcomed by the familiar smoky whiff. What I noticed is that it’s not some uncanny, dark place and, instead of the usual non-musical loud sound that’s enough to burn a hole in the eardrums, it actually has a playlist of fun and peppy numbers.

Hookah, Food, Drinks and Desserts

The place has a wide range of hookahs, as well as some really good food and drinks to go with that. My friends and I tried meetha paan, because that seemed like the unanimous choice of everyone present. For drinks, we tried the Lemon Ice Tea, Green Apple Ice Tea, KitKat Shake, and Oreo Mint Shake. Being a tea lover, I really enjoyed the Green Apple Ice Tea and the Lemon Ice Tea. I really enjoyed the chocolaty KitKat shake, as well. And while I was a little sceptical about the combo of mint and milk, it turned out to be quite good. VR1 was just full of surprises!

And another happy surprise was the food here. The starter we ordered turned out to be really good. We had Paneer Chamula, Fish Finger, Thai Ginger Chicken and Pan Fried Momo. My favourite was the fish finger; I honestly don’t remember when I last had something so juicy! I felt the momos tasted a little like frozen dumplings; other than that, I loved the other starters. For mains, we had Tex Mex Rice, Grilled Chicken with Paprika Sauce, and Calzone Pizza. The Chicken was a little on the saltier side of the scale, though it went well with the rice. The calzone was quite good, too.  For desserts, we had Choco Plant with a rose sitting in a tall glass of dark chocolate; and a Sizzling Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream, the classic favourite.

My Verdict

When it comes to food, I think their primary attention has clearly gone to the finger food, and that is understandable because that’s what most people order with hookah. I just felt that they need to work a little harder to make the mains reach the level they have set with the starters. Overall, I found VR1 a good place for youngsters to hang out with friends and enjoy some good food with hookah, while the decor and music set the mood to “fun” mode!
