Wedding Season Fashion – Trendy Lehengas for Bridesmaids

The wedding season is back again. I know it because of the wedding photos and memories that keep appearing on Facebook. And I am at that age where I receive a lot of wedding invitations, too. While I call myself a fashion blogger, my forte is not really traditional or conventional fashion. I am all for wearing crop tops as a blouse, and wearing sarees with jeans and booties.

I get exhausted, trying to drape a saree in the true Bengali style, or finding the Lehenga that doesn’t look like a cheap rip-off of Aliya Bhatt’s outfit as she hit the dance floor as the twirly Radha. It takes me more than an hour to do my makeup in a way that suits a wedding because I am not much of a makeup user. I prefer outfits without blingy, glittery embellishments on matte fabrics, which don’t trend in the wedding season.

I must say that there has been a massive transformation of fashion sense for me. As a little girl, I wanted nothing more than a “ghaghra-choli” to dress up like young Radha came to my screen every Sunday. I wanted to a large white gown, like a Disney princess, and attend a ball. I suppose when the wedding bells ring, my desire for lehengas rises to the surface. Lately, wearing crop tops with long skirts to create the illusion of a dress that gives a peek of the midriff has become trendy. I love how this is nothing but lehenga with lighter fabrics and without the dupatta. Yes, Lehengas are our desi variant of gowns created by pairing crop tops and long skirts.

Fortunately for me, the new-age designers have something for people like me. And one such designer, right here in my city, is Karuna Deora. She has a stunningly beautiful store near Maddox Square. I imagine Indian princesses had wardrobes similar to this store. It looks like a piece of some fairy tale. And it’s a candy-store – only for fashionable brides and bridesmaids. The collection includes exclusive designs. Whether you love traditional ethnic wear or Indo-western designs, there’s something for you. Patola, Bandhej, Benarasi – you name it, they have it. The plethora of contemporary churidars and long-tail sarees left me astounded, but I chose two beautiful lehenga gowns.

We have been doing this for ages, and lehengas have evolved over the ages. Fabric, volume, length of choli, cut, sleeves, neckline – designers have been experimenting with these, and the result today is that there’s something that will satiate the fashion needs of the bridesmaids, as well as the modern brides of 2018. The gowns I chose, for instance, were subtle, and yet so gorgeous! The two outfits are perfect for bridesmaids are quite different from one another.

The first one, with a beige choli top and cyan ghaghra skirt, with a velvet dupatta scarf. Its colour combination was muted and sophisticated; however, the embroidered motifs on the undulating texture of the silk, even though they were distributed sparsely, and the massive volume of the skirt made it an outfit that only a member of the royalty will dare to wear. And I was so in love with the boat neck and the bell sleeves of the top – something that’s not common in Indian outfits. It’s mid-waist length, too, was quite fashionable.

The second outfit, looked more traditional, with more vibrant colours, as shades of red popped out of the green and gold. It had lots of usage of the net, a fabric that’s in vogue at the moment, thus creating a dreamy, diaphanous silhouette. The sweetheart neckline, the length of the choli, the short sleeves, and net dupatta balanced the heavy skirt with the large volume and the layers of colours. The materials and the closely set threadwork created a noticeable opulence, while the lack of glittery decorations saved it from looking tacky.

I suppose there’s a bit of the little girl still left in me; that is why I fell in love with Karuna Deora, who turned out to be Fairy Godmother, as who took my childhood fantasies of Indian and Western fashion, fused the styles together, and sprinkled the magic dust of sophistication, to create these stunning lehengas that made me look and feel like an Indian Disney princess.

It doesn’t matter what your inner princess wants to wear at your best friend’s wedding, or even your own. KD will make the wedding season fashion easy for you. She will give you the avatar you want, and make you stare at the mirror.
